1. Stop and smell the heather – Did you know there are hundreds of varieties of heather? Purple is the most common, of course – if you find white heather, you're in luck – it's the rarest sort.
2. Tour a whiskey distillery – Scotland has an unparalleled reputation for its whiskey, and for good reason. Distillery tours, which often end with an opportunity to sample the product, are edifying as well as spiritual.
3. Bite – into some traditional Scottish cooking, and some newer creations, too, like the deep-fried Mars bar, available at many chip shops in Scotland. Of course, indulging in this delicacy overmuch can lead to one of the least fun things to do in Scotland: the heart attack. Scotland has the highest heart attack per person ratio of any country in Europe.
4. Boogie – or fling. From the Highland reel to Scottish Country Dancing, our sources say that whether you're wearing tartan or not, this is a healthy and socially acceptable alternative to kick-boxing.
5. Barter – at Glasgow's Barras market on the weekends, where fun is finding a good deal plus a whole lot of local character.
6. Score! Tickets to a football match, that is. What were you thinking?
7. Birdwatching – There are birds in Scotland that I didn't even know existed: raptors, Peregrines, Hen Harrier, Buzzard and Golden Eagle. Ailsa Craig (Gaelic for "Fairy Rock") on the South Ayrshire coast has a bird sanctuary, home to thousands of gannets. Visit Ailsa Craig at the right time (mid- to late-spring), and you could catch the fledglings start to fly.
8. Tee Off – Scotland has more than 400 golf courses where you can practice your putting out in the fresh Highland air. We don't know for sure if Scots have earned their reputation for being cheap--- uh, thrifty, that is, but let this golf course sign be a warning to you: "Members will refrain from picking up lost balls until they have stopped rolling."
9. Pipe – bagpipe instructor Dave Turpen says, "The pipes aren't just a musical instrument, they're a workout." First, learn to breathe really really deeply… Are we having fun yet?
10. Hit the open lochs – Cruise around a Loch looking for Nessie, or take a ferry to one of the many islands off the Scottish mainland for anything from fishing fun to exploration and adventure.
