Concerning the Cuillin Mountains

"Most of you will have been made aware through the news media of the fact that Chief John has put the Cuillins on the real estate market for £10,000,000.

He has been kind enough to discuss this with me over the past several months, asking me to keep his confidence in the matter until it was made public.

This has not been an easy decision for him. It is never a happy event to sell land that has belonged to a family for a long period of time, as is the case with the Cuillins and the Chief's family. At the same time, matters concerning the MacLeod Estate, which includes Dunvegan and the Cuillin, are the private business of the Chief. That Chief John would make this difficult choice for the preservation of Dunvegan, a much closer Clan link than the Cuillin, speaks for itself relative to his devotion to Clan MacLeod.

Chief John faces restoration expenses of over £4,000,000 for Dunvegan itself. After taxes, and other Estate improvements, he will have essentially none of the funds available for his personal use. It is important to understand that the Associated Clan MacLeod Societies is not a financial organization, and as such does not have the capability to intervene.

I know that all of us support him fully, and thank him for his exceptional effort to preserve that focus of our heritage as a Highland Clan, Dunvegan Castle."
